The Best Marketplaces To Sell Refurbished Products

Julie Stewart • April 30, 2020

The market for “gently used” products goes way beyond your local resale shop. Sell them online and you’ll reach a whole world of buyers. Here are some of the best marketplaces to sell refurbished products, from smartphones to musical instruments.

Back Market

Back Market claims to have the biggest refurbished buyer community worldwide, selling over 200,000 products in an average of 11 million monthly sessions. That’s pretty impressive, considering that this French startup only began operations in 2014. Since 2018 it’s been serving markets in the U.S., in addition to its European sites in France, Germany, Spain, Belgium and Italy.

Smartphones and laptops are the top-featured products on the site, but Back Market also accepts game consoles, TVs, headphones, and even coffee machines and more. Back Market also sells Apple products that have been factory-refurbished by Apple.

Back Market’s website leverages machine-learning tools to analyze listed products against 15 different quality indicators, so it can both forecast demand for its merchants and show recommended products to customers.

It also uses its own “buybox algorithm” to factor a range of product features that can determine seller quality, boosting the rankings for those in the top tiers.

Quality assurance for customers is the company’s paramount goal, and it has relationships with over 270 factories for handling the refurbishments. The company is always on the lookout for new factory partners in all of its international markets.

HOW TO CONNECT: Visit Back Market’s Seller Page to get started.

eBay Certified Refurbished

It’s hard to talk about selling used products without immediately thinking of eBay. The original American online auction site has matured into a global marketplace for new and used goods of every kind. Now, eBay has an entire site devoted exclusively to selling factory-certified refurbished goods.

Product categories for the Certified Refurbished program include:

  • Computers & Accessories
  • Digital Cameras
  • Heating, Cooling & Air
  • Kitchen, Dining & Bar
  • Laptops & Netbooks
  • Portable Audio & Headphones
  • Sporting Goods & Outdoor Gear
  • Tools & Workshop Equipment
  • TV Video & Home Audio
  • Vacuums

Direct to consumer (DTC) brands also get their own pages in the Certified Refurbished site. Consumer brands like Bissell, Dell, Callaway, and KitchenAid are among the featured DTC sellers.

To qualify for selling here, you must offer a 90-day warranty on any product sold, accept no-questions-asked returns for 30 days, and provide a money-back guarantee through eBay.

HOW TO CONNECT: Get started in eBay’s Seller Center.

Amazon Renewed

Amazon also has a Certified Pre-Owned program, called Amazon Renewed. To sell on Amazon Renewed, there are performance standards to meet. You must sell quality products that have been tested and certified to look and work like new.

The refurbishment process should include a diagnostic test, thorough cleaning and inspection, replacement of any defective parts, and repackaging where applicable.

You are required to ship products with all relevant accessories as expected for a new product, and the product must be backed by a minimum 90-day limited warranty. Categories of products sold through the program include:

  • Smartphones
  • Computers
  • Tablets
  • Cameras
  • Video Games
  • Headphones
  • Home Entertainment
  • Sports & Outdoors
  • Tools
  • Home & Kitchen
  • Automotive
  • Home Improvement
  • Musical Instruments
  • Lawn & Garden
  • Smart Home
  • Office Products
  • Portable Speakers
  • Smartwatches

There’s also a separate “Renewed Deals” section for discounted offerings.

Like eBay, Amazon Renewed also gives brands in their Merchant Center their own linked pages. DTC brands like Vizio, Callaway Golf, Apple, Dyson and Vitamix are all participating.

HOW TO CONNECT: Go to Amazon’s Renewed Seller Page for further details and to sign up.

Facebook Marketplace

Formerly seen as a province only for person-to-person selling or small local retail, Facebook Marketplace is now open to e-commerce sellers and brands of all sizes, affording them reach into multiple, highly target-able markets.

While higher maintenance is required to create and manage listings (Facebook has its own rules and processes that aren’t as automation-friendly as Amazon or Bay, which receive product feeds through APIs) the upside is that listing products in Marketplace is still free for all sellers, even commercial ones.

You can use a free Marketplace product listing to test your products’ appeal across different regional markets, demographics and user interests. Item categories that prove popular can then be promoted through boosted posts or Facebook Ads. Because you’re able to boost selectively only the best selling categories, it helps you make more efficient use of your ad budget.

Note, however, that this Facebook Marketplace option is only available right now in the United States. Go here to read more info on about how to sell on Facebook Marketplace.

HOW TO CONNECT: Start by checking Facebook’s selling policies to make sure your products don’t violate any of their rules. Then, just go straight to “Create Listing” and you are on your way.
