⏱️Reading time: 4 minutes

Packaging is often the first tangible touch point many internet customers will have with your brand, and as you know, first impressions are important. Moreover, the right e-commerce packaging protects purchases during transit without incurring high costs. Knowing the types and when to utilize them will help you find the ideal fit for your items.

## 1. Corrugated Cardboard Boxes

Corrugated cardboard boxes are a common pick. The inner layer is fluted, providing strength and cushioning to protect products from impacts. They are available in various sizes, so you can select one that fits your product’s shape and size.

These boxes are ideal for larger products or orders with multiple items. They are also great for fragile items, provided you use protective inserts to prevent the contents from rattling around.

While cardboard is recyclable, decreasing waste still makes a difference. Paper and paperboard accounted for [23.1% of U.S. municipal solid garbage](https://designerly.com/circular-packaging-design/) generated in 2018. Choosing boxes with recycled content and eliminating excessive packaging helps reduce packaging use. Make it easy for clients to recycle the box by providing explicit instructions.

## 2. Padded and Bubble Mailers

Padded and bubble mailers are envelopes that include a protective lining to help cushion things while they are being shipped. They are lightweight and add little to the weight of an order, and they take up less storage space than boxes. They are good for small products that need little padding but are not too fragile.

Use these for books or jewelry that will fit within a small protective case. Depending on how fragile they are, you may also be able to ship small electronics and cosmetics. Opt for a snug fit to restrict movement.

## 3. Poly Mailers

Poly mailers are lightweight, moisture- and tear-resistant plastic shipping bags. They closely conform to soft products, minimizing package size. Flexible packaging is also lightweight. Amazon says its shipping bags and envelopes can [be up to 90% lighter](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/sustainability/how-amazon-is-reducing-packaging) than equivalent cardboard boxes.

Poly mailers are used for garments or other nonfragile commodities made of fabric that do not need to be cushioned. Although their flexibility makes them easy to store and ship,
\\they offer little protection against crushing.

## 4. Foam-Based Packaging

Foam packaging offers protection by providing cushioning and keeping products in place. Custom inserts are tailored to specific dimensions, helping prevent damage in transit. Some foam products can even help insulate temperature-sensitive items.

The [four most common foam packaging materials](https://gpctexas.com/innovation-news/types-of-foam-packaging-materials/) include polyurethane, polyethylene, expanded polystyrene and expanded polypropylene. Some offer high impact resistance, while others provide thermal insulation, so you shouldn’t take material selection lightly.

Foam inserts are recommended for delicate electronics and other fragile or high-value goods. They are especially handy when traditional wrapping cannot give sufficient assistance. Not all foam is effective at protecting against static electricity. Therefore, you must choose foam designed to protect sensitive electrical components.

## 5. Custom and Branded Packaging

Custom and branded packaging delivers your corporate identification straight to the customer. It might be as basic as adding a logo to a mailer or creating a box just for your product. Customers will easily spot your brand when their item arrives, thanks to familiar colors and a clever presentation.

Use it for gift orders or for premium products where presentation adds value. For smaller businesses, starting with branded stickers or printed tissue paper can help keep expenses down.

The unboxing experience should relate to what customers see online. [Centric Shoppingfeed](https://shoppingfeed.com/en) helps firms to manage their product listings across multiple sales channels. Pairing searchable web listings with packaging that echoes your brand can help create a more seamless experience from browsing to unwrapping — design around keeping product protection front of mind.

## Choosing the Right Packaging

The best e-commerce packaging starts with what your goods need to get there safely. Then think about the overall cost and how the package reflects your brand. Use only what you need and choose solutions that your consumers may reuse or recycle when possible. One order may be fine with a simple mailer, while another needs a box with protective inserts. Think about how packaging impacts transit protection and the customer experience.
